Continue ReadingThe summer is over and we are starting to clean out our notebooks from July. We are digging deep into our notes on a few under-the-radar types of players and guys we want to track this coming high school season. Here is a look at some of those in the 2018 class.
Jack Hegwood – 6’4 SF 2018 – Indianapolis Roncalli / All Out 2018
Jack is a growing forward prospect with a solid low post game and upside as he gets taller over the next two years. He’s good with his back to the basket where he has a solid right-handed jump hook out to 8’. Likely going to have to stretch out to the wing more if he doesn’t grow. If he does, his stock should grow with it because he’ll fit his skill set more.
Anthony Barnard – 6’5 SF 2018 – Kokomo / Grassroots Indiana 2018 Blue
Barnard is a tall wing with a versatile skill set and a lot of room to grow. The Kokomo product is really looking like he could be in store for a big year for the Wildcats. He’s a wing that can shoot, drive, and finish. He plays with some effort and makes plays off the ball too. As an upperclassmen, Barnard should be in store for more of a scoring load this season.
Kegan Owen – 6’1 PG 2018 – Indianapolis Roncalli / Grassroots Indiana 2018 White
Kegan is a bit of a combo guard right now but could go either way in the next year as he does have some solid shooting ability from deep and some handles that could stick at a lower level program. He’s good off the catch and has a solid, repeatable shot. Guy who can big a bigger piece in the next year.
Yuri Swinford – 6’5 SF 2018 – FW Horizon Christian / Indiana Elite Green 2018
Yuri is a long, lanky wing player with a ton of upside and a skill set that is already somewhat defined. He’s a solid jumper shooter who can knock down from distance pretty well. He’s a good athlete who can get up and down the floor and handle it a bit on the perimeter. Upside comes with his handles, hopefully allowing him to be able to do more with the ball off the bounce.
Nate McLain – 6’3 SG 2018 – Center Grove / Indiana Elite Central 2018
Really like where Nate is right now. His confidence seems high and he’s playing like a guy just trying to make plays, not trying to fill up a stat sheet. However, he does fill it up most games. Nate has great size and a frame that is going to add weight in the next year. Good handles and can play on the ball if needed too. Could be a guy that a lot of non-DI programs go after this time next year.
Garrett Pumphrey – 6’8 PF 2018 – Cambridge City Lincoln / Indiana Elite East 2018
The progression of Pumphrey from the beginning of the spring to the end of the summer was really, really good. For the first time, I saw a player that looked comfortable in his body and his movement on the floor was fluid. He’s catching up and with that his play has really increased. He was a better shot blocker and a low post finisher. Has to add strength now to keep this going.
Garrett Silcott – 6’0 PG 2018 – Connersville / Indiana Elite East 2018
Garrett is probably going to be one of the players that is going to make some noise this high school season. Connersville is set up to have a really good season and compete to get to Regionals and beyond. Garrett has the ability to really shoot the ball and create off the bounce. Playing opposite of Grant Smith is going to make things a lot easier for him too.
Kellen Schreiber – 6’4 PF 2018 – Indianapolis Roncalli / SIDE Hoops 16U
Kellen is a guy who has enough versatility that he could find himself making plays on Varsity this season. At 6’4, he is a bit of an undersized forward but his willingness to defend allows him to be successful in the post. However, he’s good enough to stretch the floor out and take a perimeter jumper.
Braydon Kincaid – 6’2 SG 2018 – Greenwood / SIDE Hoops 16U
Braydon is a solid two-guard with a solid scoring threat from most anywhere on the court. Handles the ball really well in the open floor with solid decision making but he’s probably best in the half-court where he can hit pull-up jumpers from deep and mid-range and just crafty enough to get off clean looks. He likes to make plays and had some success this summer doing just that.
Alex Gross – 6’6 C 2018 – Hauser / WBC Indy Premier 2018
Alex is a big, strong forward out of Hauser that should slot into our rankings the next time around. He’s got a big, strong frame and a little aggressiveness. Has to continue getting more into plays but he’s assertive. Skilled though with a spin move in his low-post arsenal. Back-to-the-basket guy right now.
