This tournament provides a good opportunity to see some kids who may be flying under the radar as well as some good up and coming players. Here are some of the top 2017 and 2018 players:
Brady Smith 6’4″ South Central Fury (Licking, 2017): A skilled wing player who handles the ball well and can shoot the 3-pointer. He moves well without the ball and can come off screens to get buckets. Smith is very good with shot fakes and pass fakes. He also did a nice job of posting up against smaller guards to score in the post. Smith also displayed some athleticism as he drove to the basket and dunked on a few people.
Mathew Coakley 6’4″ South Central Fury (Mt. View Liberty, 2017): A nice sized wing player with a good body and the skill set to play all three perimeter positions. He has excellent court vision as he dropped several no-look dimes over the weekend. Coakley displayed excellent shooting range from beyond the 3-point line.
Daniel Kaczmarek 6’5″ Machine Elite 17U (Priory, 2017): A long, lanky forward with a versatile skill set. He was very comfortable as a ball handler and making plays on the perimeter. He is very good on the drive where he could elevate and shoot over defenders in traffic. He is also a fine mid-range shooter off the dribble. With some added weight and strength, he could be a fine small college prospect.
Marco Powells 5’11” Cobras Elite (Fort Zumwalt North, 2018): A strong point guard with a high basketball IQ, Powells is at his best when he is driving to the basket and scoring in traffic. He plays under control and does not try to force things on offense. He plays well in transition and moves the ball upcourt well with the pass. He also displayed a nice mid-range jumper off the dribble.
Brendan Boyd 6’1″ Machine Elite 16U (Lafayette, 2018): A big-bodies shooting guard with an excellent skill set and a lot of scoring ability. He could muscle his way to the basket with his strength or he could create his own shot with some nice ball handling. He displayed a good shooting touch from beyond the 3-point line. Has the strength and ability to be a good defender.
Kameron Lenoir 6’6″ Cobras Elite (Timberland, 2018): A long, athletic power forward who has a chance to develop into intriguing prospect. He is still learning the game, but he is already a good rebounder and an excellent shot blocker. He also displayed good timing with several nice tip-ins on the offensive glass. He guarded the pick-and-roll well on defense. Needs strength and continued skill development, but he bears watching.
Nick Janke 6’5″ South Central Fury (Rolla, 2018): A solid post player who good footwork and some physical moves in the paint. Janke has a nice shooting touch around the basket and he rebounded the ball well.
