The 5’11” Lyles is an excellent facilitator who embraces the role of getting the ball to his teammates who are in a position to score. At the same time, he has the ability to call his number and get buckets on his own when the situation calls for it. He balances the roles of being a passer and scorer quite well.
“I look at myself as a distributor,” Lyles said. “I want to find my teammates when they’re open and get them good shots. But, at critical times, I can get a bucket. I want to be more consistent with my outside shot.”
Lyles plays his role as floor leader well for the Missouri Hustle 16U team that has been very successful during the spring grassroots season. On a team full of talented scorers such as Trae Meny and Jamonta Black, Lyles is at the controls of a potent perimeter offensive crew.
“I can definitely be a true point guard with this team,” Lyles said. “We have a lot of good scorers and we move the ball well. We are close just like a family. It’s a nice feel.”
Lyles is a physically strong guard who is hard to knock off the dribble. He may be a pass-first point guard, but he has an excellent knack of getting in the lane and scoring around the basket. When he gets to the basket, he has the ability to create shots from a variety of angles and finish through contact. In their last tournament of the spring, Lyles had several big scoring games as the Missouri Hustle won the Silver Division at the KC Classic in Lawrence, KS.
At Sacred Heart, Lyles is a two-sport standout in basketball and football. He was an All-District selection in basketball. His goal is to lead the Gremlins to a Class 2 state championship. As an eighth grader, Lyles watched his brother Chase Lyles lead Sacred Heart to the Class 2 state championship and undefeated season in 2014.
“We definitely want to win a state title,” Lyles said. “It was exciting watching my brother’s team win the state championship.”
