At 6-foot-4, Kesterson averaged 19.9 points, 5.8 boards and 2.1 assists per game last season, shot 51 percent from the field, 44 percent from 3 and knocked down 102 3-pointers as a junior.
“I would describe my game as well rounded,” he said. “I’m mainly a shooter but have the ability to drive to the basketball. I’ve improved a lot on my defense and can grab rebounds.
“The one thing I’ve really focused on this summer is my defense. Getting quicker with on ball defense.”
Kesterson has spent the offseason playing for the Springfield-based Gym Rats, which feature some of the top players in the 2017 class in the southwest Missouri region.
“This spring and summer went well,” he said. “It’s always nice playing AAU in the summer because you get to play high level competition and get to be physical so when you go to school ball, you are able to dominate at that level.”
His Gym Rats coach, Mike Pierce, says Kesterson has taken his game has taken a big step forward during the offseason.
“He has improved his game this summer,” Pierce said. “His defense has definitely improved over the past two years. Garrett is not only a great shooter but a great kid and student.”
Kesterson says he looks up to the Pacers Paul George and the Warriors Klay Thompson due to their all-around play.
“I try to see my game as Paul George or Klay Thompson does because they can shot the 3, but yet take it in a get a bucket,” Kesterson said. “Also, defensively, they are great defenders and great at rebounding.”
Although he currently does not have any offers, Kesterson has heard from numerous schools, including Evangel, College of the Ozarks, Millikin, Central, and Missouri Baptist.
