After two excellent years as a shooting guard for the Bluejays, the 6’2″ Sharp is spending the off-season making the switch to the point guard position. He’s been playing the playmaker role for his SEMO Bulls 16U team on the grassroots circuit.
“It’s been an adjustment because I’ve been used to looking to score first,” Sharp said. “Now, I’m making sure my teammates are getting the ball to score. It’s been fun. I love it because it adds to my game.”
Sharp entered Charleston as a freshman who had the ability to score, especially from 3-point range. As a sophomore, He averaged 11.9 points, five rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals in helping the Bluejays to a Class 3 district championship. Sharp has helped Charleston to consecutive district championships in 2015 and 2016, only to see its season end in the sectional playoffs. Sharp and his teammates are hoping to change those postseason fortunes in 2017, which means getting to the Final Four in Columbia.
“I’m tired of losing in the sectionals,” Sharp said. “I want to see us do bigger things. I want to see what Columbia is like. I want to lead my team to a state championship.”
For Sharp to help his teammates reach their goals, he is also trying to improve his physical strength as well as improving his point guard skills.
“I want to get stronger and work on my jumping,” he said. “Last year, I didn’t get as many rebounds as I wanted. Now, I’m getting stronger and I can jump a little better. I’m becoming a better rebounder.”
Sharp’s improved athleticism was evident at the recent Rib City Shootout in Dexter, MO. Not only was Sharp rebounding with more efficiency, but he was also throwing down some impressive dunks in transition.
