Vincent Playing Well
Friday morning at the 8am tip offs the Schoolers were playing the Wisconsin Playmakers to improve to 2-1 on the weekend. They earned a double figure win against the Playmakers and Augustana committed Tayton Vincent led the way not just with his six field goals but with his leadership at lead guard.
Everybody knows what Vincent has gone through injury wise and there have been some down times. The summer of 2016 has been great for Vincent as he not only accepted the scholarship offer from the national champions at Augustana but Vincent has been playing noticeably better this month.
I would say the one area that really stands out is when Vincent is on the arc facing up his man or when he catches a ball reversal. We have seen Vincent time and time again use a quick first step to his left and beat a guy to the corner before they could turn their feet with the Sioux Valley guard. The defense continues to react late and while we see Vincent square up and hit the nice touching jumper, the opposition is getting beat and seeing his number 13.
It’s not just his attack to pull-up and attack to get to the rim and complete, but it’s his leadership with the ball. Vincent seems more vocal, more confident, and his pace and leadership at lead guard has helped the Schoolers play a steadier game. He’s been vocal on both ends and always locked in defensively which is big for a guy who is the leader. Vincent is playing some of his best basketball ever right which is exciting for everyone now in Las Vegas and going forward into his senior season.
Siman Fits in Well
Siman Sem is down in Las Vegas because his ECI Prospects season is over and the Minnesota Select team needed a couple players to fill out their roster. The Fargo North guard is playing with brand new players and had to learn new plays and when that’s the case transition is difficult. The Minnesota Select coaches have said Siman has handled it great and yesterday morning we saw the same.
There are guys that try and do too much with new teams and guys that work hard and fit in. Sem is the second one. His biggest contribution has been his efforts defending the ball and his efforts in the passing lane. Three times yesterday Siman got scoring chances for his team in transition jumping a passing lane and taking the ball the other way. He had a dunk, foul shots, and assists. His length on defense has really helped Select.
Another thing he has done very well is rebound. His effort has been 100 percent in every game and against Mercury Elite yesterday he had a game high eight rebounds. Sem is trying to fit in with the new bunch so he isn’t shooting much, but he has made what few shots he’s taken plus is leading the team in steals, deflections, and boards. The effort has been strong and he’s greatly helped Minnesota Select, a team that is two games under. 500 this year, win their pool with an undefeated record.
Another reason guys come to Vegas is to be seen by coaches. There have been a number in the gym but the logo that stands out the most is the Bison logo of NDSU watching him close again.
Notes
- It’s bracket play day and the Dakota Schoolers are playing as this article is being type. Minnesota Select and Siman Sem play in about five hours.
- Cooper Williams was also very impressive for the Schoolers on Friday. Made six of eight foul shots, attacked to score, and hit a three for his team high 13 points. Nice showing for the Vermillion guard.
- Watching the Schoolers yesterday was South Dakota head coach Craig Smith and all of the staff members of the South Dakota State staff. The SDSU coaches were likely watching 2018 commit Trevor Hanson who hit four double figures led by perfect foul shooting.
- Joe Jahner of Bismarck, North Dakota playing with the Minnesota Comets 15 and under tem as he has done all year. Joe is a strong 15 year old 6-foot-1 guard who does a great job using his size to battle for boards. He also appears to be a deadly shooter when his feet are set and he catches and takes shots in rhythm.
