The former Father Tolton star made his announcement on his Twitter account on Saturday. The 6’9″ small forward is ranked among the top three prospects nationally in the 2017 class. He chose Washington over Missouri, Virginia, Indiana and Oklahoma.
Porter is coming off a spectacular performance in the Nike EYBL Peach Jam where he led his MoKan Elite 17U team to the championship. He shared the Most Valuable Player honors in the Peach Jam with teammate and fellow five-star recruit Trae Young. Porter is now playing with the USA Basketball u18 team what will be competing in a FIBA international tournament in Chile.
Porter becomes the third member of the family to commit to coach Lorenzo Romar’s Washington program. His father, Michael Porter, Sr. joined Romar’s staff as an assistant coach a couple of months ago. The elder Michael Porter had been an assistant coach for the University of Missouri women’s program. Porter’s younger brother, Jontay Porter, a top 2018 recruit, had given a commitment to Washington last year.
The Porter family is moving to Seattle this summer after spending the last several years in Columbia. In March, Michael and Jontay led Father Tolton to to the Missouri Class 3 state championship in a dramatic 62-60 victory over defending state champion Barstow.
