Class of 2019 forwards Joey Baker and Greg Gantt helped lead Trinity Christian in Fayetteville to the 2015 NCISAA State 1-A title last season as freshman. Baker and Gantt did this without now NC State freshman Dennis Smith Jr., the top rated PG in the class of 2016.
Joey Baker is a 6-foot-7 wing who is playing with Team Felton on the Under Armour circuit where he is averaging nearly 12 points and 4 rebounds all while playing with the 17 and under team. He possesses a high basketball IQ that puts him ahead of most players in his class, boasts a high skill set for a rising sophomore and is one of the more athletic wings in his class. Baker averaged 12.7 points and 7.4 rebounds as an all-NCISAA state selection last season.
Baker already has offers from NC State, Clemson, Tennessee, Western Carolina, Charlotte, Virginia Tech, Texas and Hofstra. His head coach at Trinity Christian, Heath Vandevender had this to say about his sophomore, “Joey is just now scratching the surface of how good he will be. His work ethic and his basketball IQ are two of his greatest qualities. I m excited to see how great he can become.” Nicknamed “JoJo”, Baker is ranked as the #2 recruit in North Carolina for the updated class of 2019 by PrepHoopsNC.
The other half of the sophomore duo is 6-foot-6, wing Greg Gantt. A rising sophomore that has a high motor, very athletic, a good defender and a skilled rebounder already for his age. He is long, strong and has bursts of quickness in his game in the open floor or spotting up.
His head coach at Trinity Christian had this to say, “Greg has a great motor and he is special defensively, he can guard 1 through 5 for us. He is only 15 and he is getting better offensively and working on his jump shot. I think he has a high ceiling and may end up around 6-9 or 6-10 when he gets done growing – his versatility will be his biggest asset.” Gantt already has offers from Hampton University and Grambling State University.
The future is bright at Trinity Christian again this upcoming season with the return of the sophomore duo as the Crusaders will try and repeat as NCISAA 1-A state champs.
