Northwest was in a tight battle with Lift for Life Academy. In the fourth quarter, Northwest lost the services of its standout senior point guard Charles James to an ankle injury. When it looked most bleak for Northwest, Childs stepped up for his injured teammate and led his team to a victory.
The 5’9″ Childs delivered a couple of big baskets and made six free throws down the stretch as the Hornets held off Lift for Life. It was a tremendous performance by a young guard during a time of adversity for his team.
“I knew I had to step up for my team,” Childs said. “It was win or go home and I didn’t want to let my team down. I learned that you had to be ready for anything at any time. I had worked hard, so I was ready for the moment.”
The following night, Childs led the Hornets to a near-upset of Cardinal Ritter in the championship game. Childs has continued his fine play into the spring as the point guard for the Arch Ryvals 16U team.
Childs has led the Arch Ryvals on some pretty impressive tournament runs with his quickness and floor leadership. He led the Arch Ryvals to the championship game of the Jets-Ramey United Tournament last month.
A speedy southpaw, Childs does an excellent job fueling the Arch Ryvals up-tempo offense. His quickness enables him to penetrate and get in the lane against opposing defenses. He can also play off the ball and spot up and knock down a 3-pointer when left open.
“I’m pretty quick and agile, but I’m also trying to get stronger,” Childs said. “I’ve been spending a lot of time in the weight room this summer.”
With Childs returning for his junior season along with 6’5″ teammate Jamarr Williams, Northwest Academy should be one of the top Class 3 teams in St. Louis in 2017.
