The point guard position had been the domain of Jordan Barnes for the past three seasons. Barnes will be playing at Indiana State next season. In his place will be 5’10” Class of 2017 guard Josh Nunn.
Nunn played a backup role to Barnes at times and even started alongside Barnes for part of the season. Nunn did an excellent job as a junior, shooting 40 percent from 3-point range and 90 percent from the free throw line. Since transferring from Whitfield after his freshman season, Nunn has been looking forward to the moment when he becomes the point guard for one of the state’s top programs.
“I’m very excited to take the full time role of point guard at CBC,” Nunn said. “We play a tough schedule, so it will be a lot of fun. I have some big shoes to fill following Jordan, but I know my teammates, Coach (Justin) Tatum and the rest of my coaching staff are going to ride with me through the entire process, so I’m definitely looking forward to next season.”
Heading into the summer, Nunn has attracted interest from a number of colleges at different levels. Schools such as Division I Lafayette, Northwestern State, Division II Maryville and Quincy and Division III University of Chicago have expressed interest.
Nunn has been playing this summer with the Missouri Hustle 17U team. In the second weekend of May, Nunn enjoyed a breakout weekend at the Adidas Indy Classic in Indiana. Playing with the Missouri Hustle Central team, Nunn averaged 17 points, three assists and two steals for the weekend. Not only did Nunn pass the ball and set up teammates, but he showed his offensive chops by running the pick-and-roll and knocking down 3-pointers.
“The key to my success in Indy was just playing with confidence,” Nunn said. “I work hard everyday, and push myself so that in the game I can be able to play with confidence knowing that I put in the hours to have success on the court. Also, I want to give credit to new teammates as well as Coach Javon on Missouri Hustle Central. They trusted me as soon as I came on to the team and we played well together on the floor.”
As he approaches the summer portion of the season, Nunn is looking to improve his physical stretch and put a little more muscle on his slight build.
“One of the main things I want to do is add more explosion to my game,” he said. “I also want to add more strength and muscle to my frame too. Strength will be something that carries me to the next level.”
