There is no doubt that the 6’2″ Sprenkel has been blessed with the gift of long-range shooting, but he also spends hours upon hours in the gym to hone his craft. It has paid off in two very productive seasons as a varsity player where he has been a top scorer as an underclassman for the Raiders.
“I spend a lot of time in the gym shooting,” Sprenkel said. “I have a goal to usually make 500 shots a day. I split up the time with the shooting gun and with my dad rebounding. The key to me being successful as a shooter is definitely the repetition first. And with repetition I always want to go at game speed.
“If you don’t put in the time on your own and make it realistic to the game, you can’t compete as a high level shooter when it becomes game time. And also having teammates that do the little things like setting screens or giving good passes to put me in a position to knock down the shot.”
Sprenkel has been playing with the SEMO Storm 16U team on the summer circuit. He brings the perimeter shooting and ball handling to a well-balanced team that has enjoyed its share of success during the spring. They advanced to the championship game of Adidas All-American Tournament in St. Louis in April.
“Our spring with the SEMO Storm has been great,” Sprenkel said. “We have played almost every weekend and brought home a few championship trophies. We all work together really well and we are all there for the same reason, which is to get better every single time we play.”
Sprenkel’s main goals for the summer are to improve on his game and become known for being more than just a shooter. He wants to become a complete all-around guard.
“I am definitely working on my speed and agility,” he said. “I want not only to be a scorer, but I want to be a good defender. My sister coaches at the college level and she is always telling me that she’s not sure she wants to kid who cannot guard. I don’t want to be in that situation. I want a coach to see that I can do multiple things for my team.
As a sophomore, Sprenkel averaged 18 points a game to lead a young North County team in scoring. He is one of the building blocks of a young nucleus that is looking for some big success in the next couple of seasons.
“My goals for my junior season is to lead North County to a 20-win season,” Sprenkel said. “Our program is getting better every year.
