How is the 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 Schuch getting ready for his upperclassmen basketball years? By playing up a grade with the South Dakota Heat and competing at the 17 and Under level. The competition is tough and the Heat are a young team so they had some struggles in the first SPTS events but they did well in the recent South Dakota Heat Tournament.
“It has been going pretty well,” Schuch said of his time with the Heat. “Playing against older competition has been a great experience for me.”
Playing at the 17U level as a 2018 will make Schuch even tougher and it will give him valuable experience. It is also showing him things he wants to work on to be a better prospects.
“My ball handling and making my shot more consistent definitely are things I want to work on,” said Schuch. “Also, getting quicker and stronger going to the rim.”
Playing a reserve role last winter as a sophomore Schuch gave Dell Rapids six points, over six boards, and almost two blocks a contest. The team went 20-3 and had a very exciting year.
“The best part of this past season was probably playing Sioux Falls Christian. We were both great teams and had awesome battles each time we played them.”
Dell Rapids beat the eventual state champs twice during the season which is why they spent so much time as the PHD number one ranked team all year. They did lose to them in the regional title game though.
So what is next for the Dell Rapids future? They have to replace Hoglund but so much quality is coming through the system.
“We lost a large part of our offense in Ty Hoglund, but we do have quite a few players coming back and should have a solid team,” said Jeffrey about 2016-17.
Schuch will be joined by fellow 2018 class member Mason Schmidt, 2019 center Logan Heim stands 6-foot-7 and is getting better, and the seniors to be include a nice group led by Sheldon Siemonsma, Mason Peter, and Tanner Heim (Schmidt and Siemonsma play with Schuch on the SD Heat team).
The talent is there and Schuch has a chance to by the key component moving the program through the next two years and into the future. He’s off to a nice start.
