Parkway West forward Wyatt Yess has given a commitment to Yale University. The 6’8″ Yess announced his commitment via Twitter on Thursday afternoon. He is one of the top players in the Class of 2017 in Missouri. Yess chose Yale after fielding offers from Missouri, Saint Louis U., Evansville, Ohio and Wyoming.
“The big factors for me included their style of play, my relationship with the coaching staff and academics,” Yess said. “All of which made Yale a perfect fit for me.”
As a junior, Yess averaged 15.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in leading the Longhorns to a 23-6 record and a berth in the Class 4 state quarterfinals. Yess shot 44 percent from the field and 76 percent from the free throw line. He also had 57 assists, which was second on the team.
The size and versatile skill set that Yess has makes him a solid fit in Yale’s offense. He is a very good passer from the high post and he is capable of stepping out and hitting 15 to 17 footers on a consistent basis. He also made 15 3-pointers last season.
“They like to space the floor and run a ball screen offense,” Yess said. “They want their bigs to be mobile and able to score from inside and outside. They run lots of pick and pops, allowing their bigs to shoot 3’s or make a strong move to the rim.
Yess is playing with the Gateway Basketball Club 17U team during the summer. A starting forward for Gateway, Yess has helped his team qualify for the Adidas Uprising Series Gauntlet Finale in South Carolina in July.
In 2016, Yale finished 23-7 and won the Ivy League championship with a 13-1 conference record. The Bulldogs won the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, where they upset Baylor in the first round. Yale was defeated by Duke in the round of 32.
