The 6’7″ Welty led Park Hill South on a tremendous run all the way to the Class 5 state championship game in 2015, which included a stunning upset over nationally-ranked Chaminade in the semifinals. He was an All-State selection as a senior after leading the Panthers to a district championship.
Welty received plenty of interest from schools at the Division I and II levels, but he made his final decision to attend Northwest, an excellent Division II program in the Midwest Intercollegiate Athletic Association. He chose NWMS over schools such as Denver, Loyola and Mid America Nazarene.
“I felt like the Northwest coaches wanted me the most,” Welty said. “I also liked it because it was closer to home.”
Welty made his visit to Northwest Missouri’s campus in Maryville in mid-April. He is a talented “Stretch 4” who can spread the defense with his 3-point shooting ability. Welty sees those kinds of opportunities in Northwest’s system.
“The coaches see me playing really well in their system,” he said. “I’ll be able to shoot a lot of 3’s.”
