The 6’1″ Sims was the starting point guard and floor leader for the Timberwolves, who enjoyed an historic season with a 21-7 record and the school’s first ever district championship. Timberland also made a run to the Class 5 state quarterfinals.
“It was big because we were the first ones to do it,” Sims said. “And we will be remembered as the first ones to do it.”
Sims was also blessed to be back on the court and healthy enough to lead his team. He missed his entire junior season with a knee injury. The Timberwolves fell short in their quest for a district title in 2015, losing to conference rival Troy in the finals. With Sims back in the lineup, Timberland defeated Troy for the district championship this year.
“It just felt great being back out there with my team,” Sims said. “Especially after sitting out a whole year and watching my team lose in the district championship game the previous year. So, it felt great to be back out there.”
Sims has been a huge part of Timberland’s success with his scoring prowess and his ability to lead a team. As a senior, he averaged 11 points, four rebounds and two assists a game. He also made 30 3-pointers. Sims is a physical guard who used his strength to his advantage on both ends of the court.
“I am good about getting my team involved and I can be a leader,” Sims said. “I can also score the ball.”
Now, Sims is hoping to be blessed with the opportunity to play at the collegiate level. He is unsigned at this point, but he has heard from schools such as Fontbonne and Iowa Weslyan. He can be an ideal prospect for an NAIA or Division III program.
“I’m working to improve everything in my game,” Sims said. “There’s always room for improvement. I’m working mostly on my defense and 3-point shooting.”
