The 6’5″ Spence is at his best when he delivers his mid-range jump shot, which he makes with high regularity. With his size and athletic ability, Spence is able to get off his mid-range jumper against any type of defense.
Spence has received an offer from Division I Southeast Missouri State and has strong interest from Indiana State from the Missouri Valley Conference. Spence has been playing this summer with the Jets-Ramey United team that competes in the Adidas Uprising Series. Spence is one of several talented, big wing players on the Jets.
“I like playing in the Gauntlet because there is a lot of great competition,” Spence said. “We have a good team. We have a lot of good player from the metro area. We have a lot of good guards and the coaches let us all get our share.”
When Spence’s game is going well, he is capable of scoring at all three levels. In addition to his mid-range jumper, he has the ability to get to the basket and finish at the rim. He is also a good enough 3-point shooter to keep opposing defenses honest. While Spence is a talented offensive player, he wants to improve in several other areas to reach another level of recruiting.
“I think my consistency and intensity are the two biggest things that I’m working on,” Spence said. “I’m also working on improving my ball handling.”
A three-year starter, Spence has been a standout at MICDS since his freshman year, when he was an All-Metro League selection in 2014. As a junior, Spence averaged 18.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists in leading the Rams to an 18-9 record and the Metro League championship.
Spence is hoping to lead the Rams to even greater heights as a senior as the Rams return virtually every key player from its conference championship team.
“I want to make it down to Mizzou my senior year,” said Spence, referring to the site of the Final Four of the state tournament. “We have everybody coming back, so I think it’s a realistic goal to have.
