Now, heading into June and July, we are expecting some breakouts and based on the spring, you can see who they are going to be. We are taking a look at some of the potential breakout candidates later this summer.
Isaiah Thompson
5’11 – PG – Zionsville – Spiece Indy Heat 2018
There isn’t a more poised player in that 2019 class than Thompson. He was set from the start of last high school season to be one of the best the state has and he’s looked very comfortable at the point even playing up a year with Spiece this spring. Thompson looks the part of one of the first in the class to pick up an offer. Only two others can say they have done that so far and if Isaiah ends up being the third, it should shock no one.
Mason Gillis
6’5 – PF – New Castle – Indiana Elite Diesel 2019
Dealing with the time between Baseball and Basketball has put things a little slower for Mason, however, he should really be the type of kid that is going to leave an impression in the three live periods in July. He’s a big, strong low post threat that has about the best motor in the state. He attacks and attacks and it only takes one game to see that part of his game. Gillis might not be a guy that picks up any offers this summer but in terms of overall perception, it should take a big step forward.
Alex Hemenway
6’2 – SG – Castle – Pocket City Basketball 2019
Alex is one of the two players in the state in 2019 that can say they have an offer in hand before their freshman year is complete. He’s a very dynamic guard who has a tremendous ability to effect the game on the offensive side of the ball. Hemenway has size and tons of skill and is the best player on his AAU team and with their schedule come July, he should be able to showcase that even better. An already big spring is going to turn into a big summer quickly for him.
Sydney Curry
6’7 – PF – Fort Wayne Bishop Luers – Indiana Elite 2019
Syndey is, for me, the best player in the class and he doesn’t have an offer yet. It is likely to come sooner rather than later. He has overwhelming size and once he is able to tap into that motor a little bit more and condition his body, his upside could be huge. You see it every time on the floor and you just don’t grow players his size everyday. The key here is his athleticism. He has shown that he can play above the rim and be really good in short spurts. That isn’t going to go away and it is only going to get better. Give him time and he can only go up.
