The smooth lefty displayed a variety of ways to score throughout his career in a Spartans uniform. When he is at his best, he can change speeds and directions and keep opposing defenders off balance. He can stop and pop on the dime from the mid-range area and can shoot the 3-pointer well enough to keep defenders honest.
“The keys to my success on offense are my ability to get to the basket and finish at the rim,” Gilkey said. “Also, my ability to shoot the spot-up 3-pointer or off the dribble is huge for my scoring success.”
Gilkey’s scoring prowess has garnered him interest from several schools from different levels. NCAA Division II, NAIA and junior college programs have been tracking him all season.
Some of the schools that have expressed interest in Gilkey include Central Missouri, Missouri Baptist, Harris-Stowe, Missouri Southern as well as junior colleges Kirkwood C.C., Mineral Area and Lincoln Land.
As a senior, Gilkey averaged 12 points, three rebounds and two assists a game while making 38 3-pointers. He also had a habit of taking and making big shots, as exhibited by his runner jumper at the buzzer that gave DeSmet a 5149 upset over Metro Catholic Conference rival SLUH on December 18.
“That was definitely the highlight of my senior year,” Gilkey said.
In addition to his ability to score, Gilkey also wore several different hats for the Spartans, who battled injuries throughout the past two seasons. Although a natural scorer, Gilkey also spent a lot of time playing point guard. He also improved on the defensive end while having to guard some of the area’s top players who happen to play in the Metro Catholic League.
“My major strengths of my game are my leadership on the floor, my ability to score and get my teammates involved,” he said. “Also, I have the ability to defend opposing guards.”
Gilkey spent the past summer playing for the Team Ramey 17U squad.
