He scored in a multitude of ways. He finished in transition and on several drives to the basket. He knocked down 3-pointers and some mid-range shots. He was very good all weekend.
Isaac Weider 6’3″ (Gateway): A true bucket-getter with downtown shooting range, Weider can go on stretches when he scores 12 to 15 consecutive points. He was pulling up and knocking down 25 footers with ease. He also did a nice job of getting in the lane and creating offense. A true scorer.
R.J. Lawrence 5’11” (KC Pacers): A quick, lefty point guard who was instrumental in the Pacers winning the 16U championship. Opposing teams had trouble keeping Lawrence out of the lane as he exhibiting excellent dribble penetration. He also showed the ability to hit stop and pop jumpers off the dribble. Very impressed with his performance over the weekend.
Dominic Mitchell 6’3″ (St. Louis Prospects): A grade school post player who is making a successful transition to a high school wing, Mitchell did a nice job of handling the ball and creating offense from the perimeter to the post. He has an old-school feel to his game as he can make shots from different angles and positions. He was one of the top scorers over the weekend. He is still tough in the post, but has continued to extend his game.
Austin Thompson 6’1″ (Missouri Impact 17U): An athletic point guard who played up with the Impact 17s, Thompson is an excellent passer who is starting to develop his offensive chops. Displayed good penetrating moves to the basket and a nice mid-range jumper off the dribble. Also displayed some athleticism with an explosive one-handed dunk in transition. A very good on-ball defender.
Kaleb Overall 6’4″ (Gateway): A big, athletic combo guard who is a potent offensive player. Overall is a really dangerous performers in transition with his ability to finish, dunk and find the open man on the break. Very comfortable with the ball in his hands, but did a nice job scoring on cuts off the ball. Has the potential to be a dominant defender and rebounder from the guard position with his size and athleticism.
Hayden Sprenkel 6’1″ (SEMO Storm): One of the best long range shooters I watched in the tournament, this young man had no trouble ringing the long distance bell. I was very impressed with his shooting range and his quick release. Helped lead the Storm to the championship game.
Rayonte Childs 5’11” (Arch Ryvals): Had an impressive showing in the two games that I watched over the weekend. Has excellent quickness and savvy and can play the game at different speeds. Displayed some slick moves to the basket and the ability to knock down short jumpers. A very good passer as well.
Cameron Van Leer 6’4″ (Gateway): A versatile big guard who can play all three perimeter positions on the floor. A coach’s son who understands the game well. Can get to the basket and shoot over smaller defenders. He is a very good passer who is capable of shooting the deep ball. He is still growing which will make him attractive to colleges.
Klay Barton 6’1″ (SEMO Bulls): One of the top perimeter shooters in the tournament, Barton shot the ball consistently well all weekend. He made 3-pointers off the catch early in the tournaments, but then I saw him knock down a couple from long distance off the dribble.
