Indiana Elite Magic 2017 won the 17U Gold Bracket, EG10 2018 won the 16U Gold Bracket, and Indiana Elite 2019 won the 15U Gold Bracket. Here are the rest of the top storylines from the action in Fishers.
Indiana Faith 2018 Makes Run, Knocks Off Team Harris, Indiana Elite Central 2018
If you have watched the top Indiana Faith teams over the last year or so, you have noticed a trend in their makeup and play. They aren’t going to have the most talented, highest rated kids but they do have a whole roster of guys that are going to play at the next level. You should have also noticed that they are going to out-hustle and out-play you if you are messing around. Got to watch a glimpse of that again on Sunday with their 2018 group.
Led by Jordan Webb, you get the sense of this team’s energy really quick. The team seems to feed off that a bit and it helped them on Sunday as they needed an extra gear to take on some of these other teams. Against a more talented Team Harris 2018, it came down to a last second missed free throw to seal an upset win for Indiana Faith 2018. Next, they played Indiana Elite Central 2018 tough. Faith only rosters 7 players but 5 of them scored 10 points or more in the win. However, that would be the last win on the day as EG10 2018 pulled away at the end of the 16U Gold Championship Game.
This is going to be a good group, molded in the way they have been for the past few years and should have a few more weekends like this where they pull the upsets, outwork the other team and make a deep run in the Gold Bracket. Look for a Program Preview of Indiana Faith later in the week on the site.
Indiana Elite 2019 Is Stacked, Could Have Huge Season
Watching the younger age groups each year, you try to get a sense of who is going to be good and who is going to struggle. Then, every once in a while, you see a team that is just so much better than the others it is clear as day that they aren’t going to lose many games if any. This was my thoughts on Indiana Elite’s 2019 top team. Having known the roster for a while, I knew it was going to be good but I didn’t realize how much bigger and more skilled it is than the competition. Now, they go to Dallas next week and play some really good teams and that will be an actual test but I’m pretty sure they should have a good weekend.
Led by Sydney Curry in the low post, this team has tons of weapons. Kyle Rode and Michael Moreno, two Kentucky kids, along with Mabor Majok will help give this team tons of size. Cobie Barnes and Semaj Danley give them some potent wing options and Spencer Reist, Carson Dolezal, and Manuel Brown makeup their guards. The bigs are going to get the most love but Barnes and Reist are going to make some noise as well this summer. Again, the real test comes this weekend but for a 15U team that goes 6’7, 6’7, 6’6, 7’1 in the post, that is really going to be hairy for teams to stop.
Indiana Elite Magic Take Down Grassroots Indiana, EG10 To Win 17U Title
Indiana Elite Magic was the team last year that liked to pull some upsets. New coach, new players, brand new team but the same results. On Sunday, Magic took down Grassroots Indiana 2017 Blue and EG10 2017 before knocking off Indiana Elite Blazers in the final game. We talked about Grant Smith on Saturday for Indiana Elite Magic but his teammates stepped up on Sunday to help get the big wins.
Guards Mateo Rivera and Tim Leavell were really good on Sunday. Leavell is coming off a State Title run with Marion and looked in prime form getting to the rim and hitting from the perimeter. However, Garrett Covington was the best of the day. The 2016 holdover from Carmel had 24 points in the semifinal game against EG10 2017 and the had 34 points in the Championship win over Blazers. This is a team that is still missing a couple key pieces from their team and only played with 7 this weekend.
