By far the hardest list to pick from, there were so many seniors that deserved recognition for their play this season. This list, which features 10 players on each team, includes multiple high major commits and two McDonald's All Americans. With so many seniors that played such a big role on their team this season, we included a lengthy honorable mention list of all the players we considered, it was far from easy, but we did our best to make our choices for the 2016 Vantage Hoops All-Seniors Team. Check it out below, and let the debating begin!
Senior of the Year
[caption id="attachment_42433" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Travis Fields showed his toughness in Norcom's third straight state title.[/caption] Travis Field, 5'10” PG, Norcom: He may not be the top prospect on this list, but Fields was as important as any player in the state. The 5'10” PG who recently committed to ODU led Norcom to the state championship for the third straight year, and did so by getting a steal and hitting the game winning shot with no time left in overtime, a game in which he scored 30 points to lead the Greyhounds. He led Norcom to just one loss in arguably the toughest public school schedule in the state.
First Team
Justice Kithcart, 6'2” G, Virginia Episcopal: The former Pitt commit (reopened his recruitment last week) was vital for VES in their run to the VISAA Division 2 Championship. The combo guard missed part of the season with an ankle injury, when his team went on a slump, but he bounced back for an amazing playoff run, finishing the season with 19 points and 4 steals in their win over Blue Ridge in the State Championship. Tyler Scanlon, 6'6” F, Westfield: We often talk about great athletes for what they're able to do above the rim, but Scanlon won two state championships this year, both against Oscar Smith. The Boston University commit followed his football state championship with two dominant performances in the state semifinals and finals, and capped the season by being named 6A State Player of the Year. Sacha Killeya-Jones, 6'11” C, Virginia Episcopal: McDonalds All American and Kentucky commit were two things that some people questioned before this season, but Killeya-Jones answered those and made believers. The bouncy and skilled 6'11” big showed that not only does he have upside, but he has the toughness and competitiveness to lead his team and be the go-to guy when they need a basket in their state tournament run. Devonnte Holland, 6'7” PF, Martinsville: The back-to-back 2A State Player of the Year was one of the most dominant big men in the state. A Radford commit, Holland led Martinsville with more than 22 points and 12 rebounds per game, and also led them to their second straight state championship. Javin Montgomery-DeLaurier, 6'8” PF, STAB: After one of the best summers of any prospect in the state, Montgomery-DeLaurier continued his dominance for an upstart St. Anne's-Belfield team that made their first trip to the VISAA Final Four in school history. The Duke commit did a little bit of everything on both ends for them, and finished as a VISAA Division One All State selection and Prep League Player of the Year. VJ King, 6'6” SF, PVI: The McDonalds All American and Louisville commit was one of the top scorers in the DMV area this season, averaging upwards of 26 points per game. Despite a loss in the state finals to Episcopal, King was still good enough to be named VISAA and Gatorade State Player of the Year. Nick Sherod, 6'5” SG, St. Chris: The Richmond commit not only was a walking double-double that averaged more than 24 points a game, he also broke the state record for most points scored in a high school career. Sherod was one of the best shooters in the state, and the focal point of every defensive game plan which makes his numbers even more astonishing. Malik Johnson, 5'8” PG, Blue Ridge: Last season's VISAA Division Two POY didn't come away with the award this year, but he still showed he's one of the toughest competitors in the state. The Canisius commit led Blue Ridge to an incredible 24-4 record, and was the best player on one of the most consistent teams in VA all season. Charles Falden, 6'3” SG, LC Bird: One of the best available seniors left in the state, Falden was both consistent and clutch for the Skyhawks all season. The capping moment, which likely won him 5A State Player of the Year, was his 35 point outburst in their state championship loss, in which he scored 18 points in the final 2:35 of the game.
Second Team
DeMonte Buckingham, 6'3” G/F, Henrico (Richmond commit) James Butler, 6'6” PF, Lake Braddock (Navy commit) Adam Grant, 6'1” G, Norfolk Collegiate (Bryant commit) Xavier Green, 6'6” Wing, Williamsburg Christian (ODU commit) Maliek White, 6'2” PG, George Wythe (Providence commit) Donald Hicks, 6'4” SG, Oscar Smith (Radford commit) Nick Reed, 5'11” G, Episcopal (Rochester commit) Kendrick Tucker, 6'3” G, Northside Jeffrey Gordon, 6'3” SG, Potomac Blake Burdack, 6'8” PF, Radford
Third Team
Deng Nhial, 6'5” wing, Wakefield Keaton Simmons, 5'9” PG, Stonewall Jackson Jermaine Marrow, 6'2” G, Heritage (NN) Kuony Deng, 6'4” wing, John Champe (VMI football commit) Edwin Ebube, 6'5” PF, Episcopal Grant Robinson, 6'0” PG, Potomac School Robert Tartt, 6'1” G/F, George Mason Bryan Hart, 6'1” G, Hampton Roads Academy Georgie Pacheco, 6'2” G, Deep Run (Liberty commit) Richard Washington, 6'5” SG, Walsingham (Wake Forest commit)
Honorable Mention
Kyle Copeland - Tuscarora DaMontez Oliver - Deep Run (Campbell commit) Sebastian “Bash” Townes - Norfolk Collegiate Gerrard Simpkins - Bishop Sullivan John Reed-Barnes - Gate City Jeremy Carter-Sheppard - John Marshall (UCF decommit) Gus Rowland -
