University City upset No. 1 seed Westminster Christian 72-61 while No. 2 seed Parkway West defeated No. 3 MICDS 55-44. Parkway West came away with the championship after its 55-31 win over University City. Here is a look at some of the top prospects in the tournament.
2016
Aaron Cook 6’2″ Westminster; The talented point guard did not get to play in the districts after suffering a shoulder injury late in the regular season. The electrifying Cook averaged 22 points a game as a senior and delivered one scintillating play after another. He has signed with Southern Illinois of the Missouri Valley Conference.
Nick Lathrop 6’6 Parkway West: A very solid post player who gets all of his work done in the lane. He is a good finisher inside in the Longhorns’ high-low offense. He plays good position defense and battles for rebounds. A good small college prospect.
Caleb Socha 6’3″ Parkway West: An excellent 3-point shooter, Socha nailed three triples in both the semifinal and championship games. Had a knack of knocking down the 3-pointer when his team really needed it. Shot 42 percent from long distance this season. Another good small college prospect.
2017
Wyatt Yess 6’8″ Parkway West: The best player in the tournament. A versatile big who can play on the low post or on the perimeter with equal effectiveness. Can knock down the outside jumper and is an excellent passer from the high post. Has a very good set of fundamentals. A Division I prospects with offers from Saint Louis U., Mizzou and many more on the way.
Alec Spence 6’5″ MICDS: Athletic wing player who has the ability to score from several different spots on the floor. At his best when he attacks the basket and when he pulls up for the mid-range jumper when he gets good elevation. A Division I prospect who already has an offer from SEMO. Getting interest from several other low and mid-major programs.
Zach Bush 6’1″ University City: Athletic guard who led the Lions’ upset over Westminster in the semifinals with 25 points. Really did a nice job of attacking the basket and finishing at the rim. Does an excellent job in U. City’s up-tempo system because he plays well in transition. Averaged seven assists a game.
T.J. Crockett 6’1″ University City: Terrific scoring threat who can get buckets in transition and can knock down jumpers. Averaged more than 20 points a game this season while shooting 42 percent from 3-point range. Does and excellent job in the open court.
Steve Webb 6’2″ Westminster: A high-motor wing player who is at his best when putting his head down and getting to the basket. Had 26 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to U. City. A physical performer at 190 pounds who can bully his way to the hoop. Also an excellent prospect on the football field.
Cliff DeGroot 6’2″ Westminster: One of the top 3-point shooters in town when he is on his game. Nailed nine 3-pointers in a game earlier this season. Very good on the catch and shoot with great range from long distance.
Matt Roper 6’4″ MICDS: Long, skinny wing player who is also a knock down shooter. Had his best game in the first round against Clayton when he scored 19 points. Has improved his ability to put it on the floor and drive when defenders begin to take away his 3-point shot.
2018
Dominic Mitchell 6’3″ MICDS: Versatile forward who has an old-school feel to his game. A match-up problem because he has an excellent low-post game with a variety of moves and fakes. He can step outside and handle the ball and make jumpers off the dribble.
Austin Thompson 6’1″ MICDS: Emerging young point guard who can run the show and be a disruptive force on the defensive end. Nice court vision. Improved on offense as he can attack the basket and finish and knock down the mid-range jumper.
Michael Akinwumi 6’5″ Parkway West: Young post prospect who did a nice job of filling in for Yess, when he got in foul trouble in he finals. Good athlete who is an active rebounder and defensive player around the basket. Played a more limited role this season, but has a good up-side.
