If there was a bucket to be gotten, the 5’11” Alston could deliver at a moment’s notice. If there was a rebound to be had, he would grab his share despite not being the biggest player on the court. If there was an assist to be made, Alston was very good at making his teammates better.
It was that kind of all-around play which enabled Alston to earn Prep Hoops Missouri All-State honors in Class 3 after leading Caruthersville to a 17-10 record and a berth in the state quarterfinals. Alston has received interest locally from Three Rivers Community College in nearby Poplar Bluff.
One of the big highlights of the season was winning a district championship and getting to the sectionals, where the Tigers defeated perennial state power Charleston. Caruthersville defeated the Bluejays twice during the season. Alston scored a game-high 24 points in that victory, including 13 in the third quarter when the Tigers trailed at halftime.
“My feelings after winning the district championship were excitement knowing I had accomplished one of my major goals,” Alston said.
In his senior season, Alston averaged 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists a game to lead his team in all three categories. He was one of the top scorers in Southeast Missouri with his ability to get to the basket and knock down jumpers. He has the quickness to get to the basket and the strength to score in traffic against bigger defenders.
“My individual success came from making the right choices at the right time, getting my team involved and being a consistent defender,” Alston said. “I allow myself to be a dynamic scorer when I just play basketball and let the game come to me, but the major thing is that you have to have heart.”
As much as Alston has the ability to score in a variety of ways, his six assists a game definitely illustrates that he is a point guard who is willing to facilitate and create for his teammates.
:”I feel like I’m a better point guard because I distribute the ball well,” he said. “My strengths as a player is that I have a high basketball IQ as a point guard. I just try to keep my team’s heads high and lead them the right way.”
