Sam Husting, a 6-foot-1 shooting guard, helped the Crusaders rebound from a nine-point third quarter defect to rally for a 73-63 win over Springfield Glendale at Southwest Baptist University last Saturday to advance to this weekend’s Final Four. The Crusaders had four players in double figures in that contest, including senior guard Sam Husting who went for 17 points, including a key stretch in the third quarter.
Trailing 44-35 with 5:11 remaining in the third, Helias finished the frame on a 13-0 run to take control of the game. Along the way, Husting delivered eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
On Friday, Helias was scheduled to face off with Lafayette in a Class 4 semifinal game.
A 6-foot-2 senior guard, Husting is the teams leading scorer this season at 17.2 points per game, and has chipped in 2.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists. This to go along with 83 3-pointers made and a 36 percent clip from beyond the 3-point arc. He has teamed with sophomore guard Landon Harrison to form one of the state’s better backcourts as Harrison is averaging 15 points and is shooting 46 percent from long range.
“I just try to play with a high basketball IQ,” Husting said. “I can shoot it and handle the ball. I have to keep working on my quickness, rebounding and defense.”
“He’s been our go-to guy all year and he has stayed the course and shown a lot of leadership,” Helias head coach Josh Buffington said.
A four-year varsity player, Husting broke on to the varsity scene earning a role with the Crusaders as a freshman. Huffington said Husting is a gym rat who is always working on his game.
“He wants to be good and is good and is a good student,” Buffington said. “He got a 32 on his ACT and has a ton of leadership abilities. He is one of the best shooters I’ve ever coached and he handles it on a string and he plays so hard.
“What more could you ask for as a coach?”
Although he has yet to commit, Hustag has drawn interest from a host of schools. He has offers from Lake Forest, an NCAA Division III school located 30 miles north of Chicago, Ill., DePauw, a D III school located in Glenwood, Ind., and Kenyon College, a D III located in Gambier, Ohio. He has heard from several other programs as well, including Columbia College and Missouri Baptist among others.
