The Tigers are currently ranked No. 2 in Missouri Class 5, and remain undefeated at 27-0. They will face Raymore-Peculiar at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday in a Class 5 sectional game at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence.
“It is awesome; but coming in, this group of seniors, we had something special,” Spellman said. “We had seven seniors, but we didn’t know it was going 27-0 for sure. We didn’t think there was going to be anything like that. But this is a special group, for sure.”
Lee’s Summit has faced a daunting schedule in the Suburban Gold, which features Lee’s Summit West, Raymore-Peculiar, Lee’s Summit North and Blue Springs South. Three of those six teams are in the playoffs.
“That is the fun in it, it wouldn’t be fun if we were going out playing 3A schools,” he said. “It is fun playing the best of the best. It makes us stronger as the season goes. Our regular season makes us better for the post season.”
Spellman signed with Northern Kentucky before his senior season after drawing interest from several schools. Spellman said he also had offers from Gonzaga, Southern Illinois and Wofford, among others.
“I had a couple bigger (schools), but the thing is I want to play and I just want to have an impact on the school and they are rebuilding,” he said. “We have a great freshman class coming in. Some go to the biggest schools and sit for four years, but I want to come in and have an impact and play right away. Gotta go down there and get to work.
“I took my official (visit) down there. It was home. A great group of coaches. I am looking forward to it.”
He says he needs to get stronger before arriving at Northern Kentucky next season, but that will be a focus for the offseason.
“I am not lifting right now,” he said. “Once season is over I am going to take a week or two off then get in the weight room. At the next level you got to get stronger.”
Spellman said the experience of playing with Kansas City-based Run GMC helped prepare him for the big season.
“Playing in the Under Armor circuit … every single night you are playing against top kids and against great competition,” he said. “There are 200-300 coaches in attendance, it was an amazing experience.”
