The 6’9″ McDonald’s All-American led the Red Devils to a 27-5 record and the Class 5 state championship. Tatum averaged 29.5 points a game to lead the St. Louis metro area in scoring. He also averaged 9.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 52 percent from the field and 86 percent from the free throw line.
Tatum posted his splendid numbers against a national schedule that was dotted against many of the country’s top prep basketball teams. Some of Tatum’s best work against national competition included:
*40 points against Miller Grove (GA) in an 86-77 victory in the Chicagoland Classic
*40 points against Bentonville (ARK) and All-American Malik Monk in a 76-57 victory
*46 points against Huntington Prep (WV) in an 84-83 victory at the Cancer Research Classic in West Virginia
*32 points and 14 rebounds against Belleville Althoff in an 81-66 victory at the Highland (Ill) Shootout.
In his final push to the state championship, Tatum finished with a flourish. He scored 33 points against Hazelwood Central in the sectional playoffs, then followed up with 45 points against CBC in the state quarterfinals. He scored 28 points against SLUH in the state semifinals.
In his final game in a Chaminade uniform, Tatum scored a game-high 40 points in the Red Devils 72-59 victory over Kickapoo in the state-championship game. He finished his career as Chaminade’s career scoring leader, passing former McDonald’s All-American and current Washington Wizard Bradley Beal.
Tatum will attend Duke next season where he will be a part of the nation’s top recruiting class.
