It isn’t a shock at all that Seymour is the toughest Regional in the entire state. With the best team in the state in New Albany, you would have to think that is a good start. But, what makes this Regional so outstanding is the addition of a Bloomington South team that has outperformed preseason expectations, Franklin Central who has been one of the toughest outs in Indianapolis this year, and Evansville Reitz who is looking to make another deep run into late March. This group is stacked 1 through 4. New Albany would be the favorite but it is easily within reason that any of these teams could walk away the winner.
The next best Regional is Logansport. The group of teams in this one that we have seen before, just last year in face. Carmel and Homestead have been in this position a lot the last few seasons. McCutcheon is looking to get their first Regional win since 2001 and come in as the best team. Watch out for Fort Wayne Carroll, though. These teams are all talented and have the capabilities of winning games in multiple ways. Homestead is the one outlier here as they lost most of everyone from a State Championship last year except Tahj Curry but have made strides over the last part of the season to get to this point.
Southport is split right down the middle. On one side you have North Central and Southport, the two teams you expect to see in the Championship game. On the other hand, you have Terre Haute South and Connersville. Both Terre Haute South and Connersville will have their work cut out for them if they are to see the Regional Trophy on Saturday. But, the strength between North Central and Southport is what makes this such an intriguing site. Southport is looking for their first Regional title since 1990, 26 years ago. It will be a fun day no matter what but if all things stay chalk, it will be one of the best Championship pairings in the state.
In Michigan City, you have some teams who have been up and down this year and then you have Warsaw who has been about as steady as they come. South Bend Riley made noise at this time last year as they bolted into Semistate before anyone knew what they had done. This season, they have been on the defense and that has led to some tough losses. East Chicago is in basically the same position. Then you have Crown Point who was looked at as a potentially great team this season but has fallen early and just now starting to put things together. However, Crown Point has been tested as well as anyone and it looks like that could be paying off.
