Fort Wayne Canterbury Survives
Canterbury has been one of the more dominant teams in at the Sectional level the last 5-10 years. However, they have only made it to Semistate once before this year and got a bit lucky with the Westview draw in the first round of Regionals. Hammond Noll made things interesting but ultimately an 11-0 run in the second half put Canterbury in prime position to get just their second Regional Championship.
Lapel Dominated Eastern, Fought Through Oak Hill
Lapel has all the makings of a possible State Champion. They overwhelmed Eastern (Greentown) with their shooting in the first game of the day. However, Oak Hill put together a 23-point fourth quarter but just came up short as Lapel won 52-51. In the first game, it was their stars Herrington and Richardson. In the nightcap, it was their depth with Carpenter and Scott leading the way.
Late Turnover Helps Howe Get Past Northeastern
Northeastern came in as the team to beat in the Greenfield-Central Regional and even after the first set of games, their defeat of Cloverdale left little else to be desired. But, one play changed everything. Howe played them tough and Northeastern had the ball, tie game, with only a few seconds left. Howe pressed up, got a steal, and won on a last second layup. This is Howe’s first Regional Championship since 1981.
Providence Won, Even Without Electricity
In what is the weirdest set of circumstances for a game this playoffs, Providence won their third Regional Championship in the last decade after an hour long power outage in Paoli. The outage came with 4:27 left in the game with Providence up 34-23. When the game got restarted again, Providence hit 14 of their final 20 free throw attempts to seal it as Linton tried to make a run.
