Kyle Cavanaugh, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, had the biggest night for either team, pouring in 26 points, including several big buckets in crunch time.
SG Kyle Cavanaugh (Fair Grove — 2016)
Cavanaugh is a 6-foot-2 guard who excelled at both ends of the floor on Saturday. While his breakaway slam (pictured) and his 26 points steal the show, it was his defense on Conway guard Andrew Huckaby that really turned the tide. Conway’s offense looked to flatten out the defense and give its guards a one-on-one opportunity, and Cavanaugh won many of those battles against Huckaby. He is a terrific athlete and has really improved his 3-point stroke during his high school career. He likely has a place at least at the NAIA level.
SG Garrett Kesterson (Fair Grove — 2017)
Few players in the Springfield area have a smoother perimeter jumper than Kesterson. A 6-foot-4 junior, Kesterson has grown several inches in the past few years and is capable of impacting the game in many more ways. Has improved his ability to put the ball on the floor, although he really didn’t display it on Saturday. Conway played lock down defense on Kesterson and held him to three 3-pointers. Kesterson is likely an NAIA prospect, but still has a year ahead of him to take his game to the next level.
F Evan Fullerton (Fair Grove — 2017)
Fullerton has a basketball frame with long arms, broad shoulders and sneaky athletic ability. It was his work on the offensive glass in the fourth quarter that helped the Eagles pull out a win over Conway as the 6-foot-7 forward got his hand on three Fair Grove missed free throws and managed to tip the ball to a teammate. He has a nice shooting touch from the outside but needs to be more aggressive and stronger with the ball. D3/NAIA prospect
G Andrew Huckaby (Conway — 2016)
Has put together a terrific high school career, scoring more than 1,500 career points. Had a big senior season and is at his best shooting the ball from distance. Also has a nice mid-range game as he is adept at sticking pull-up jumpers. A fierce competitor, Huckaby is also a standout on the baseball field and helped lead Conway to a district title last season. D3/NAIA
PG Chris Vavruska (Conway — 2016)
Formerly Chris Terry, Vavruska is a sneaky quick point guard who excels at breaking down defenders and getting to the paint and making plays. Is at his best attacking the basket and either finishing over defenders or setting up teammates. He struggled through injuries this season and, like Huckaby, is also a standout baseball player. Will need to improve his outside shooting to take his game to the next level.
