A long, rangy athlete, Brooks has the ability to do a little bit of everything. He is a wing that can shoot the ball from the outside, but he’s also lone enough to mix it up in the paint. Toltol head coach Jeremy Gardner said Brooks also brings a high basketball IQ to the floor.
“Kenan is silky smooth,” Tolton head coach Jeremy Gardner said. “He is definitely a guy that is extremely efficient. He is a smart basketball player. He takes good shots and does the little things that go un-noticed, often times — the hard close outs, the box outs, making the extra pass … he may not average 20, but he’s capable of scoring 20.
“He would be the No. 1 option on any other team. A guy like that gets overlooked at times. …”
Brooks has started to field interest from college programs and said he has most recently heard from Westminster, a NCAA Division III school in St. Louis, and Kansas Wesleyan, an NAIA program.
“I’m so blessed to even have the looks I’ve gotten and I trust in God that there will be more to come as we get deeper into the season,” Brooks said.
Brooks spent the offseason play for MoKan Select, his first year of high level AAU ball and said the experience was terrific for his growth as a player. Still, he said he has room for improvement, and has several personal goals he wants to achieve this season.
“One of my goals by the end of the season is to have a 10-plus rebound game,” he said.
Like many of his Tolton teammates, Brooks is enjoying the spotlight that comes with playing with Michael and Jontay Porter. The later has committed to Washington, while the former is regarded as one of the nation’s premier players in the Class of 2017. With them comes big crowds.
“I’ll always love them like brothers,” Brooks said. “I don’t have to tell you how amazing they are … but they’ve been some of the most caring guys I’ve gotten the chance to be around.”
