The 6’4 guard picked up his first offer about three months ago from head coach Kevin Carroll of Maryville, a DII school in Missouri. He recently took a visit there to see the school and meet the full coaching staff.
“The staff was great,” Blackwell said. “The campus is set up very nice. They have a lot of new buildings coming in and the school seems to be expanding, and they have a very high rate for jobs after college and they think I will fit well with their program.”
With it being his first offer, there is some level of “appreciation” but the process is only beginning. He plans to wait until next fall before making a decision but Maryville was the first to strike. Ball State, Cornell, Elon, South Dakota State, Penn, and the University of Indianapolis have all reached out as well Daulton says.
The thing that make Blackwell and interesting prospect is his versatility and skill set. He’s a taller guard but handles the ball well and can make plays on the perimeter. He’s worked on his defense and that could go a long way to helping him at the next level.
“Over the past year I’ve been focusing more on my defense especially on the smaller and faster guards,” Blackwell said. “I’ve really worked on becoming more of a combo guard and not just a shooting guard by working my ball handling more and attacking the paint, because your better being multi-dimensional than being one-dimensional in this game.”
He’s had a solid year for Mitchell but the team is 5-9 on the season. Through the first 8 games this year, Daulton was averaging just over 12 points per game. Over the last few games he has picked it up a bit with 26 points against Pike Central and 21 against West Washington. This summer he’s going to have to show he’s got some firepower in him but this last stretch of games has shown a bit of the potential he has.
