9:00 AM – West Lyon vs. Canistota.
Canistota is 4-0 and is one of the top two teams in South Dakota’s Class B level. West Lyon is 3-5 on the season after losing their last two games. They are led by 6-foot-2 sophomore Jaden Snyder who averages 15 points a game and leads the team in assists. Snyder will likely see a lot of Canistota sharp shooter Shay Jolley and wing teammate Mason Decker. West Lyon is hoping to avoid 3-6 while Canistota is neck and neck with Warner as the top teams in Class B. Big early game on Heritage Court.
10:30 AM – Chester vs. Elkton-Lake Benton.
The District 7 favorites go head to head as Chester Area (3-1) faces Elkton-Lake Benton (2-1). Chester lost to Tri Valley but recently countered with a win over MCM. Elkton-Lake Benton lost to Flandreau by seven points while Chester beat that same team by double digits which leads one to believe Chester is the favorite. Chester senior wing Jacob Schoeberl and sophomore guard Devin Eppard lead the way for Chester with Schoeberl, a PHD 100 senior talent, leading as a scorer and Eppard being the backcourt playmaker. Matt Leiferman leads a balanced Elks squad.
12:00 PM – Vermillion vs. Warner.
PHD has put a big spotlight on this game as its Class B number one Warner taking on top ten Class A ranked Vermillion who is coming off a two score loss to fellow Class A ranked Tea Area. To maintain that top spot Warner needs this win, but to avoid a two game losing streak, Vermillion needs a victory. Both teams have a star with Vermillion led by guard Cooper Williams and Warner using one of the state’s best inside in 6-foot-10 Michael Rogers. The match-up to watch though will likely be on the wing as Vermillion’s Jerimiah Johnson goes at Ethan Westby of Warner. Both teams have solid depth as well so this should be an excellent game. Riley Peterson of Vermillion has a big job facing Rogers inside.
1:30 PM – Tea Area vs. Worthington.
Few in South Dakota have played the schedule that Tea Area has and they are 3-2 after a win over Vermillion. Ethan Freidel was recently named South Dakota Player of the Week after scoring 53 points in two games. Ethan, Cole Sabers, and Cole Barthel team with youngsters Noah Freidel, Justin Hoffer, and Kaleb Joffer for an inexperienced but potent line-up. Worthington started the year losing four of five games and is now 4-6. They have a nice win over Luverne but Worthington has lost by double digits to every solid to good team they have played so far. Worthington has some decent guards all ranging from 5-foot-11 to 6-foot-1 and they are Gbrown Ochothow, Tyler VanHove, Zach Boever, and Tucker Sorenson.
3:00 PM – Tri-Valley vs. Clark-Willow Lake.
Tri-Valley is 3-2 beating Chester and Sisseton but falling to Madison and Tea Area. Clark-Willow Lake is 2-1 at the start of the year after falling to Dakota Valley early and then bouncing back to win two before Christmas break. Clark-Willow Lake is a senior dominated club with Cooper Hartley, Braxton Hartley, Noah Huber, and Rory Forest back along with sophomore Bryden Rusher. Tri Valley is a young group with excellent juniors Will Steineke and Jayden Burggraff as well as a load of sophomores (just two seniors on the roster). Steineke is one of the state’s best posts but Huber gives up very little ground.
4:30 PM – SF Lincoln vs. Sioux Valley.
Last night Lincoln lost to one of best in Minnesota yesterday (Marshall, by 13) and the defending champs are 0-3 on the season and now they have to try and get win one against an undefeated Sioux Valley squad that is ranked 4th in Class A at 5-0 with wins over Clark/Willow Lake, Parker, and Dell Rapids. The Cossacks are one of the most talented teams in the state with Tayt Vincent, Trevor Hanson, Collin Kramer, Trevor Olson, Noah Puetz, Collin VanderWal, and Zach Puetz all having an impact. Kramer will play for DWU next year, Olson is a high ranked sophomore, and Vincent is coming off an injury but is still a top junior. Lincoln has a host of new players and senior Nolan Burchill has been the leading scorer with fellow senior Tommy Jensen and junior Carson Coulter supporting. Lincoln is playing all upperclassmen and sophomore guard Dillon Barrow.
6:00 PM – SF O’Gorman vs. Western Christian.
O’Gorman was considered the preseason favorite in Class AA as they have the most returning talent and some of the state’s best talent overall. They are 3-2 with a couple local wins and a win over top ten Minneapolis Henry countered by losses to the best high school team in the nation (Findlay Prep) and an overtime loss to current South Dakota number one Watertown (who lost to Pierre so who knows who is number one now). O’Gorman has MN State Moorhead signed Ben Lauer, one of the top junior prospects in Matt Cartwright, intelligent lead guard Antonio Casiello, and host of experienced role players. Their next challenge is undefeated Western Christian (5-0) from Iowa led by 6-ft-6 Dordt committed Josh Van Lingen who is averaging 18.6 points and 10.4 rebounds a game. Josh is a top 15 prospect in Iowa while junior teammates Ben Gesink and Jesse Jansma both average double figures and are top 100 ranked juniors in the state.
7:30 PM – SF Washington vs. SF Christian.
All hoop heads in Sioux Falls will have eyes on this game. The number one ranked Sioux Falls Christian squad is not only undefeated at 3-0, they hammered good teams from Elk Point-Jefferson, West Central, and Lennox by a combined 107 points. Washington is 4-2 with good wins over More and Roosevelt but losses to Yankton and four-time defending Minnesota state champion DeLaSalle. Washington was expected to still be a senior dominated club by a couple of their tough guys (Ty Smith and Matt Farniok) didn’t go out for the team and Sam Siganos is out with a broken jaw. That leaves shooter Carter Keller and grinder Sam Gezehagne to produce from the senior class along Jack Tally and Isaac Goeman from the junior class and outstanding sophomores Logan Uttecht and Zach Heins. All that talent will go against the number one Christian squad that will have Jackson Schipper against Uttech in the backcourt, Keegan Van Egdom matching Keller’s shots on the wing, Chad Barkema’s active length and all around play against that of Tally, Austin Scherer facing Goeman in the post, and Dejay Fykstra working against Gezehagne as the do it all workers. There are great match-ups everywhere for what should be a great game.
9:00 PM – SF Roosevelt vs. Madison.
Second ranked Madison has one of the deeper rosters out there and early in the year they are 5-0 with wins over Lennox, Tri-Valley, Elk-Point Jefferson, and others. It’s a deep club that has seniors Taner DenHoed and Tanner Burg as well as juniors Mason Leighton and Marcus VanderBosch all producing regularly. Roosevelt is 2-3 but coming off a 13 point loss to Rapid City Stevens. The Rough Riders should match-up well with USF signed Tristan Teichmeier, Tyler Van Voorst, and Manny Christopher teaming with young talent Christophe Bwayna and Peyton Riggs. This should be another close game that caps of the day of hoops well.
