Xavier Rhodes, a 6-1 sophomore guard, has helped the Hawklets to a 5-4 start to the season and was recently named to the all-tournament team for his efforts at the William Jewell tournament where Rockhurst reached the championship.
Rhodes is smooth off the bounce and has the ability get around defenders and into the lane where he can finish and set up teammates.
“I’m really good at penetrating to the basket and hitting the open 3 and also getting my teammates open,” he said. “And what I bring to the team is always being competitive and helping the team win.”
Already his play has turned heads of college coaches as he has drawn interest from North Dakota State and Pittsburg State.
Rhodes said playing during the summer with a talented MoKan Elite squad where he was a starting guard for its 15U team, helping the team to three tournament championships during this past July AAU season helped prepare him for his first season of varsity basketball. He was the leading scorer for the Hawklets in the championship game of the William Jewell tournament on Wednesday in a losing effort and has been among the team’s leading scorers this season.
“(Playing for MoKan Elite) was really great experience and going against the top players and top teams in the nation,” Rhodes said.
Still, Rhodes says his game has room to grow and he has been hard at work adding other elements.
Rhoades says he has been working on his outside shot and going strong to the basket and also my defense that I have been improving on.
