For the Jolley family Canistota Hawks basketball is a family affair. Shay’s father Pat is the head coach and his brother Scott is a sophomore guard. After ten games it’s been a memorable season.
“It’s going pretty good so far,” Shay told PHD today. “We lost a close game in overtime at the Pentagon earlier this season for our only loss (West Lyon, Iowa was the team that beat the Hawks).
“We have guys that have stepped up quite a bit that year and that’s a big reason for our success. We have two big games coming up with Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in the Hanson Classic at the Corn Palace (next weekend) and then Chester at home in Canistota (January 26th).”
SCW is 7-1 and ranked 8th in the state and the Hawks also play Hanson this evening. The year opened with a win over the Irene-Wakonda Eagles by 15 points which was a big moment for Canistota.
“A moment that stood out was our season opener with a big win over a solid Irene-Wakonda team,” Shay said.
The 6-foot-1, 165 pound guard is happy with what he has done so far this season.
“I feel like I have played pretty well so far,” Jolley explained. “I think I’ve become more of an all-around player this year instead of just a scorer.
“However my three-point shooting percentage isn’t quite as good as it has been so I hope to improve on that and do whatever I can to get my team wins.”
Jolley has impressed college coaches with Canistota and with the South Dakota Heat so there are a couple schools interested and Shay knows what he wants to go into career wise.
“I want to go into the medical field but I am still undecided where I want to go. Dakota Wesleyan has been talking to me and so has Mount Marty College.”
