The 6’2″ Husting is enjoying an excellent senior season in leading the Crusaders to a 8-4 record against a very rugged schedule which includes the likes of Springfield Kickapoo, CBC and Father Tolton. With Husting leading the way, the Crusaders are one of the state’s best teams in Class 4.
“Our season is going well so far,” Husting said. “We have lost some close games against some very good teams.”
Many colleges have taken notice of Husting’s play throughout the season. Schools that have shown interest in Husting include nearby Columbia College, Washington University, DePauw, Trinity U., Lake Forest, Kenyon (OH) and Central Methodist.
One of the main reasons why Helias has been so competitive has been the shooting the prowess of Husting, who is shooting 40 percent from 3-point range and has made an average of three 3-pointers per game.
“Sam Husting is one of the best shooters I’ve ever coached,” said Helias coach Josh Buffington. “His individual work ethic on his game has been unmatched in this region and beyond in my opinion.”
Husting has vastly improved his numbers since his junior season when he averaged 9.3 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists a game. Through 12 games this season, Husting has boosted his averages to 19 points and four assists a game. He enjoyed a very good summer while playing with the St. Louis Gym Rats 17U team and spent countless hours working on his game. So far, the results have showed in grand style.
Husting was selected to the All-Tournament Teams at the MBCA Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield and the Joe Machems Great 8 Classic in Jefferson City. He averaged 25 points in three games at the MBCA Classic, including a 35-point outing against Springfield Central.
“His game has really evolved into different dimensions due to his game speed commitment,” Buffington said. “Therefore, he has turned himself into a tremendous high school basketball player that is sought after at the next level.”
