Continue ReadingIt’s a relatively new choice for Paxton Bergdoll, but it certainly is a big one. After an impressive fall campaign playing football, the 6-foot-6 forward from Concordia Lutheran High School has seen his interest rise in that sport.
It has left him with an important decision of whether he will pursue football or basketball at the collegiate level.
“Right now, I have no idea if I’m going to play football or basketball yet,” Bergdoll said. “Still deciding.”
The options in basketball for the No. 56 prospect in the Prep Hoops Indiana Top 200 include offers from St. Francis and IU South Bend. Football doesn’t have any official offers on the table yet, but it has plenty of interest from Div. I programs like Toledo, Cincinnati and as a preferred walk-on at Indiana, and from smaller schools like Yorktown State.
Bergdoll has been on visits for the two schools for basketball, and while he isn’t sure about which sport he will pursue, he has seen how playing on the gridiron has helped him on the court.
“Football definitely helped me a lot with my lateral quickness, my physicality, my strength, the way I see things from reading defense in football to reading the court now in basketball is definitely a lot easier,” he said.
With the decision looming, Bergdoll has said he will wait until after the season to make a final decision. He is doing that partially to see if the football interest turns into scholarship money and to continue harnessing his newfound improvements on the hardcourt.
“The physicality from football, I’m getting to the rim a easier this year because of it and seeing the floor better and dribble penetration is starting to come along,” Bergdoll said. “I think my game is going up and the team is going up, too.”
