But that’s understandable. The Red Devils feature one of the country’s premier recruits in Duke signee Jayson Tatum, as well as Iowa signee Tyler Cook. And that’s not all. Chaminade 2016 Mike Lewis, who has signed to play at Duquesne, is one of four players who have committed or signed, joining big man Will Gladson (Princeton).
Lewis said he chose Duquesne over IUPUI, who Lewis said was also on his short list, as well as Illinois State, Missouri State and St. Louis.
“The biggest thing about the program was the coaching staff,” Lewis said. “I felt in love with those guys when I went there for my visit and they were there for me almost all the time during the recruiting period.
“It is a pretty historic program and they have had some great guards come through there. Their style of play, getting up and down in transition fits my style well.”
Lewis,a 6-foot-1, 170-pound point guard, is third on the Red Devils in scoring, averaging 8.9 points per game. He is second on the squad in 3-pointers made with 27 and is shooting 33 percent from long distance.
“One thing I am pretty good at now is getting my team involved, attacking the paint and kicking out to shooters and finding great players like Jayson and Tyler around the rim,” Lewis said. “Another thing is just being a leader out there and picking guys up when they get down on themselves and knocking down shots when I can.”
Lewis and Chaminade has a played a national schedule that includes a showcase game against Oak Hill on national television, as well as games at the City of Palms Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla., and most recently a contest against famed DeMatha Catholic at the Hoop Hall event held in Springfield, Mass.
A week ago, the Red Devils were in Springfield, Mo. where they competed in the 2016 Bass Pro Tournament of Champions, placing third.
“It (the TofC) was great, there have been a lot of great players come through this tournament, a lot of great teams and a lot of great coaches,” Lewis said. “Just to be another kid that has played here was great.
“The crowd was amazing. We were only three hours away from home and we normally have pretty big crowds — but 10-11,000 people at a game … I can’t wait to get to college now.”
