The 6’5″ forward is the top player of Stanberry’s team that is currently undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state among Class 1 schools. On a team blessed with good size and some good athletes, Hailey is a true stat-sheet stuffer for the Bulldogs.
Through the first nine games of the season, Hailey is averaging 19 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.1 steals. He also shoots 79 percent from the free throw line.
“My strengths as a player are shooting and going to the basket,” Hailey said. “I’m also good at passing. I prefer playing on the perimeter.”
Hailey spent the past summer playing for the Kansas City Premiere 17U team, where he had an opportunity to play multiple positions on the floor.
“That really helped me because I got to play with a lot of top players,” Hailey said. “I think it made me a better player.”
Hailey’s goals for his senior season are very simple; that is to get back to the Final Four of the state tournament. He got a taste of the Final Four as a sophomore when he averaged 15 points and seven rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a third-place finish. Stanberry fell one game short of their goal of the Final Four last season when they were upended by Winston in the state quarterfinals.
“The goal of the season is to get to state,” Hailey said.
As a senior, Hailey has already experience one state championship experience. He was a two-way standout on Stanberry’s 8-man football team that won the state championship in November. Although playing college football is a possibility for Hailey, he prefers basketball at the next level. With his size and versatility, Hailey could be a good prospect for NAIA or Division III programs, or possibly Division II.
“I’ve talked about playing football, but I want to go for basketball first,” he said. “I’ll see what happens before I decide what to do.”
