But they can’t be on their phones if they want to see what the 6-foot-2 guard brings to the table.
Seiko has put up a well-rounded stat line this season, averaging 8.9 points,2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He is shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range.
But those numbers only tell part of the story, according to Nichols.
“Here’s what I tell everybody: If you want to find out who Adam Seiko is, you can’t be on your phone,” Nichols said. “If you’re on your phone, you miss everything he does well. If you have the ball in your hands four percent of the game, Adam is all about the other 96 percent.”
Teams that are currently showing are USC-Barbara, San Diego State, Virginia, Long Beach State, Portland, Grand Canyon. Seiko said of those, Virginia and San Diego State are at the top of his list, but as a 2017, he has plenty of time to make a decision.
“I think I’m going to whittle it down at the end of the summer with my family and coach xx and see what the best decision is for me,” Seiko said.
“I’m very passionate on defense,” he said. “I like to bring a defensive intensity to the team. I like to hit open shots. I’m just a team player — whatever it takes for my team to win, I go out there and do it.
“Obviously, I have to work on everything. My one-dribble pull-up, a floater inside, my court vision.”
Nichols said he has taken on all-comers defensively as Sierra Canyon has played a national schedule that has vaulted them into the national rankings. Last week, Sierra Canyon showed off its talented roster at the 2016 Bass Pro Tournament of Champions, held at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.
“He defends every teams best players and has guarded some of the best off-guards in the country,” Nichols said. “Last year, he guarded Dwayne Bacon (Florida State), Aaron Holiday, DeMatha guard DJ Harvey … tonight Kickapoo’s Jared Ridder comes into the game and he is a high-level scorer. He has 10 in the first half and we hold him to three in the second half.
“The kid can really play.”
For his part, Seiko said competing at the Tournament of Champions was a terrific experience. Sierra Canyon advanced all the way to the championship game where they fell to nationally ranked Oak Hill on a shot at the buzzer. For his efforts, Seiko was awarded the Father John Savage Award.
“It’s a great tournament, the energy was incredible,” Seiko said. “We never played in front of 11,000 people before. I would like to thank the people who invited us here and gave us a great opportunity to come here and put ourselves in front of the best in the country.”
