The Cloverdale Clovers and the Covenant Christian Warriors faced off in the first boys game of the day at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. It took the Warriors a quarter to get warmed up and after that they pounded the Clovers, 92-62.
At the end of the first quarter the score was 23-14 in favor of the Clovers, by halftime the Warriors took control and led 41-30 and the Clovers did not have an answer for the many scorers that the Warriors had.
Cloverdale wanted to get out and run and they did just that in the first quarter running the floor, creating great spacing and easy buckets while forcing turnovers on defense. The Clovers got tired in the second quarter though and that led to their demise.
Covenant Christian took 44 shots in the paint and got in to the paint at any time they wanted. They shot 60 percent in the game while holding Cloverdale to 41 percent.
The Clovers rebounding woes also continued as they were outrebounded by 20, 44-24. They also gave up 16 offensive rebounds which led to 17 second chance points.
Covenant used a balanced attack with six players scoring in double digits to thwart any chance that Cloverdale had in the game.
Covenant Christian was led by junior Kierson Watts with 24 points who led all scorers. Cloverdale sophomore Jalen Moore was right behind him with 22 points and junior Butler commit Cooper Neese had 19 points.
Both Moore and Neese shot the ball 20 times and opposing teams are starting to learn to shut down these two players and it will lead to an easy victory.
The two combined to shoot 15-for-40 and even though they combined for 41 points that will not win you many games.
Covenant Christian, on the other hand spread the ball around and looked to get it to the open man who consistently knocked down the shot.
Along with Watts the other double digit scorers for the Warriors were sophomore Jordan Webb with 16, seniors Max Leary and Matt Murphy with 12, senior Hananiah Davis had 11 and the other player in double digits was sophomore Emery Brough who had 10.
