Starters Dane Holmes, Bryce Bennington, and Blake Bennington have led Twin Lakes to a pair of nice early season victories over Kankakee Valley and Winamac but a early season Tournament victory at the J&C Hoops Classic would go a long way to starting this season off right.
On Monday, they took on Benton Central in the opening game of the tournament. Early foul trouble hurt Twin Lakes. Dane Holmes picked up two fouls in the first quarter and out went their best rebounder. A couple of quick shots fell for Benton Central and they kept it close entering the second quarter.
Bryce Bennington, who had started off slow, got going in the second quarter as he attacked the rim on both ends. He made up for some of Twin Lakes’ rebounding issues with Holmes on the bench. Benton Central continued to hang around and were only down 30-39 at the break.
Holmes stepped back in to start the second half and started going to work in the low post. BC struggled to match his size Holmes took advantage of that. The difference-maker down the stretch, however, was Bryce Bennington. He continued to attack the rim and was stronger and more athletic than everyone else allowing him to run down and win tons of long rebounds and loose balls.
Twin Lakes continued to slowly pull away and finished with a opening round win over Benton Central, 75-43. Bryce Bennington finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Dane Holmes chipped in 16 points and 5 boards. Benton Central was led by junior wing Johnny Lannie with 15 points.
Benton Central (1-2) will face Frankfort on Thursday night at 6:00 PM. Twin Lakes (3-0) will battle with Lafayette Jeff on Friday night at 6:00 PM.
