The Red Devils feature of the nation’s premier recruits in the 2016 Class in 6-foot-9 Duke signee Jayson Tatum, as well as Iowa signee, 6-8 PF Tyler Cook. And then there’s Dusquene signee, 2016 G Michael Lewis, as well as 2016 big man Will Gladson, who at 6-10 has drawn the interest of several college coaches.
But the next wave of Red Devil players are already making an impact for a talented Chaminade team, led by 6-foot-6 wing sophomore Jericole Hellems.
Hellems says he brings an all-around game to the table with an unselfish mindset.
“ I really like getting my teammates involved,” he said. “I feel like I am a smart player so I know when something will be there for me or when it won’t be there.”
After playing junior variety last season, Hellems took on a prominent position this past summer with the St. Louis Eagles 16-and-under squad and saw his game blossom.
“I really have improved on my ball handling from last season, and my shooting because I have a lot of scorers on my team so that usually leaves me open and I need to be able to knock down those big time shots,” Hellems said.
This season he is averaging 5.4 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. And while those numbers may not be eye-popping just yet, playing time is at a premium on a stacked Chaminade squad.
“The St. Louis Eagles are a tremendous program,” Hellems said. “I love playing for them. They have helped me become not only a better basketball player, but also a better person as well.”
Hellems, who says he patterns his game after his favorite player — Kevin Durant — is already drawing the attention of college programs, including Virginia, Iowa, Mizzou, SLU, Wichita State and Drake.
