Horne is a 6-foot-7, high energy, versatile 4 man who can handle the ball, shoot from mid- and long-range, hit the open man with good passes and cause problems for defenders in the post.
He received 27 offers including Pepperdine, DePaul, Kansas State, Minnesota, Iowa State,Nebraska,West Virginia, Clemson, Wichita State, Memphis, and Cincinnati. He narrowed his list down to five, Pepperdine, DePaul, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Nebraska, and chose Nebraska early in the fall.
His head coach at Barstow, former Kansas Jayhawk Billy Thomas, said Horne has been a big part of his team’s success since stepping on the variety court as a freshman four years ago.
“Jeriah Horne has been our heartbeat since he stepped on the floor as a freshman, with his competitive toughness,” Barstow head coach Billy Thomas said. “His improvement every season has been astounding, as his game has grown physically and mentally.
“He’s one of the best high school scorers we’ve had to come through the KC Metro area. He also rebounds at high level, making him an instant 20/10 guy. His leadership was stellar last season and I expect that to continue, with the help of the rest of our starters taking more of that responsibility also.”
Horne said he patterns himself after former Michigan State and current Golden State Warrior star Draymond Green, who is extremely versatile, plays with a high motor, and has solid guard skills.
“My game was most influenced by my high school coach (Thomas), who needed a strong player and leader and by the highly competitive nature of AAU basketball,” Horne said. “Playing for KC Run GMC opened my eyes to the competition in my class. I worked hard on every aspect of my game to meet the challenge.”
While Nebraska fans are anxious for the arrival of Horne on their campus, he and his Barstow teammates have high expectations for this season. Barstow not only returns Horne, but standouts Shea Rush and Jacob Gilyard from a state championship team.
“It was awesome winning state in 2014-15! The Barstow community overwhelmed us with support,” Horne said. “Each year holds a different promise. Either way, we will continue to work hard.”
