His father, Otto Porter, Sr., was a star athlete at the high school and collegiate level in Southeast Missouri. Older brother Otto Porter, Jr. was a high school superstar at Scott County Central who now plays for the Washington Wizards in the National Basketball Association.
A 5’10” senior guard, Porter may not have the height of his 6’9″ brother, but he does have the same championship pedigree. Jeffery Porter has been the linchpin of back-to-back state championships at Scott Central, the program with the most state championships in Missouri. His goal for the 2016 season is simple.
“Our goal is to get back to the state championship,” he said. “That’s the main goal.”
Porter came up big time after time in leading the Braves to the Class 2 state championship last season. If the Braves are to win a third consecutive state crown, Porter will have to play an even bigger role as he is surrounded by virtually a brand new supporting cast.
“It’s been a little tough at times because we have a lot of new people who aren’t used to playing a lot,” Porter said. “But they are working hard and they are getting there. I realize that I have a lot more responsibility on my shoulders. I know I need to be more aggressive throughout the game.”
When Porter gets into attack mode, he is very difficult to stop from getting to the basket. He is strong physically and is able to get in the lane with regularity to finish at the rim. He also has a excellent mid-range jumper, which is set up by his cross-over dribble. It has become his go-to move when he really wants to get a bucket.
Porter’s other goal is to get an opportunity to play at the collegiate level. At the present time, Porter does not have any offers, but some schools are starting to show some interest. One school in particular was NAIA power Columbia College, who had an assistant present to watch Porter play in the first round of the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament.
Porter scored 16 points as Scott County cruised to a victory over Meadow Heights.
