St. Thomas More junior Jake Satter is one of the best shooters in the state of South Dakota. He hit 43 percent of his treys a year ago which is no easy accomplish considering that defenses focused on his shooting stroke regularly.
Satter was the main scoring option for a state bound team and he led the entire state of South Dakota in treys made. St. Thomas More has big expectations this season considering that they bring back all of their main pieces and most of those pieces played last year as underclassmen.
PHD has the Cavs ranked second in the preseason Class A poll. Jake’s off-season was all about basketball. He traveled with the South Dakota Attack, he went to camps with his team, and he even went to a camp in Arizona. For Satter, it was all about hoops and now college programs are seeing the 6-foot-5 shooter’s talent.
PHD talked to a source close to Satter and learned that two programs have already extended offers.
“Jake has offers from Arizona Christian University and Black Hills State University. He has a visit scheduled with South Dakota School of Mines, and is in contact with a growing list of other division two schools that includes Minot State and Northern State.”
Satter’s talent makes sense for schools. He’s a long backcourt player at 6-foot-5 with perimeter skills which is highlighted by his shooting touch. Jake also has the performance results to back it up.
September Update
Think back to the winter headlines: “More used a trio of Satter threes to build their edge”, “Satter hits 8 threes to lead Cavs”, “Satter hits 6 threes to lead More to third in state”.
That’s just a sample of Jake Satter’s impact last year. Jake is a 6-foot-5 skilled wing that extends defenses in the 2017 class. After looking over a bit of video, PHD is convinced he may be one of the most underrated talents in the area.
Even more impressive is the impact he had on South Dakota Attack who had a 19-5 season through the spring/summer.
“I really enjoyed playing with the Attack this summer,” Jake told PHD. “Lee Taylor is a fantastic coach, and the whole team was made up of great guys. I can’t tell you how much fun that team is to play on. I think we were the best 16U team in the state, too.”
PHD agreed with that ranking the 16U group over all the other 16U teams in South Dakota. Jake’s year actually had a setback that he quickly bounced back from.
“I sprained my ankle in June at the Tech team camp which slowed me down at the start of the AAU season, but I played through it and contributed more and more as the summer went on.
“I’m a shooter, but I wanted to focus on defense and learning to play faster and in a motion offense, which is a different style than what we run at St. Thomas More. Coach Taylor helped a ton, and I think I ended the summer having accomplished and learned what I wanted with Attack.”
Jake really enjoyed the Grassroots season and he did a lot of crediting his coaches for the experience.
“In (Grassroots) you’re basically playing on a team that’s made up of the best players from a number of schools, and your competition is typically the same way. So the best thing about (Grassroots) is a dramatic step up in competition and learning to play a different role from your school team.
“With Attack, there was the added benefit of the fun we had traveling to bigger cities as a group. And again, Lee Taylor taught me a lot, and he was fun to play for.”
Satter plays for one of the top Class A teams in South Dakota which is St. Thomas More and after a state tournament appearance where the Cavs won two of three games and took home fifth, expectations are high.
“We’ve been to the state tournament with a young team each of the last two years, so even though we’ll have only one senior on the roster this coming season expectations are high for STM.
“We should be better than last year, but our road to state will be much tougher with a very strong Spearfish team coming down from AA into our region. We have some size and skill, and I believe we have the best coach in the state, so I think we’ll be all right.”
Satter led the team in scoring last year but he felt he needs to expand what he does the next two years on varsity.
“My game was one dimensional on the offensive end – shot 43 percent from behind the arc making 91 treys, and didn’t do much else. I need to play a much more well-rounded game if we’re going to reach our potential.
“I know my defense has improved quite a bit this summer, and now at 6-foot-5 I can help Isaac more on the boards. Coach Hollenbeck has told me I have to be more aggressive going to the basket, and need to get to the line a lot more for us. That’s what I’m working on this fall.”
Jake is still in the early stages of his recruitment but this is a guy that PHD and college programs will be talking about for a long time.
“As I head into my junior year, it seems like teams are starting to follow me. Six D2/NAIA programs and one D1 have made contact. Out of the area, I’d say Arizona Christian has shown the strongest interest.”
