Versatile 2016 SF Devaughn Rucker of Whitfield has turned into the complete multi-tasker for a young and talented Warriors team.
The 6’5” Rucker brings a little bit of everything to the table for the 5-2 Warriors, who are the No. 4 seed at the upcoming MICDS Holiday Tournament. Rucker averages 11 points a game, but he also rebounds, blocks shots and serves the role as Whitfield’s point-forward.
Rucker’s overall play has earned him scholarship offers from Division II programs such as Lindenwood, Illinois-Springfield, Truman State, Missouri S&T and Division III power Washington University. Rockhurst University stopped by to watch him play last week at the Public-Private Showcase in St. Charles.
“I want to show all the different things that I can do,” Rucker said. “I want to be able to shoot, defend, pass and handle the ball; whatever I can do to help the team.”
Rucker is a tough match-up for opposing defenders because of his size and ability to handle the ball. He has been able to beat bigger defenders off the dribble throughout his career, but he has now developed a more consistent 3-point shot to become an even more dangerous offensive player.
“DeVaughn’s dedication to becoming a more versatile player on the offensive end was purely through his desire to become better,” said Whitfield head coach Mike Potsou. “He has spent countless amounts of time working on his shot and it’s paid dividends. His size, ability to handle the ball and pass while knocking down open 3’s makes his tough to defend.”
Rucker scored 19 points to lead Whitfield past Memphis Catholic 61-57 at last weekend’s Midwest Showdown Shootout at CBC.
