A year ago, the 6-foot Spellman averaged 16 points and 4.5 assists as a junior and helped lead the Tigers to a 19-6 record and a district championship.
“Blake Spellman is an outstanding high school point guard who has started every games since his sophomore year,” Lee’s Summit head coach Blake Little said. “During that time he has been the piece that has really made us go and one of the key reasons we have both been so successful and fun to watch.
“He is an incredibly hard worker, always in the gym working on his game. His skill level is off the charts and one of the reasons I think he will be able to step on the court day one and contribute at Northern Kentucky.”
Spellman said he is a crafty point guard who can score and set up his teammates and he committed to play at Northern Kentucky late in the summer.
“I always try to improve on eveything with my guy, but the thing i work on most is pull ups,” Spellman said. “I feel like there is no defense for a 1-2 pull up.”
He spent the summer playing with KC Run GMC, but says former Oklahoma State standout Victor Williams has influenced his game.
“(Williams) is who I train with and he has pushed me to make me better,” Spellman said. “Playing for Run GMC was the best experience of my life. coach LJ Goolsby and the rest of the staff are truly the best coaches in the country, will push you to your full potential, and care about you even outside of basketball.
“It’s also great to play the best competition in the country every weekend.”
Spellman said he had an offer from Albany and drew interest from Gonzaga, Southern Illinois, Wofford, Jacksonville, Bucknell, South Dakota, Belmont, Western Illinois and Drake.
“I can’t wait to be apart of the Northern Kentucky family,” Spellman said.
