5 Storylines
- Game One for Legacy. Bismarck Legacy plays their first Class A game tonight with Jamestown being the opponent. With the Jays returning seniors Nick Fuchs and Noah Wanzek, can Legacy ride the wave of emotion to pick up an opening victory despite no seniors obviously on the roster? Austin Wolf is a player to watch for the Sabers and Coach Jason Horner will have the team jacked up but what happens the first time they hit some adversity? The Jays are expected to be improved after going 10-14 a year ago.
- Hellebust vs Moody. The only game matching ranked teams this evening has an outstanding match-up of the best guard in the senior class (Connor Hellebust) going at one of the top guards in the junior class (Aanen Moody). Both play for teams that are replacing numerous senior starters so a lot of weight will be on their shoulders at the start of the season. Seeing the quick Moody release against that quick first step of Hellebust will be a fun watch.
- De’Sean Goes For…. Turtle Mountain lost their entire rotation from last year’s team. They have one senior and a team full of new players. De’Sean Allen-Eikens went for 24 a game as a freshman. I can’t imagine what is going to happen now that De’Sean, who is bigger, stronger, and even better, will be going at a team with no experience at all. Could it be 40 plus tonight?
- Minot begins its Road to Repeat. Minot takes on a St. Mary’s team who we just found out will be playing without their best player Casey Uhler. St. Mary’s is bringing some players back from a 6-17 team but without Uhler the opening night game may be ugly.
- GFRR opens in Minnesota. Thief River Falls is a nice first opponent coming off a 17 win season. The Prowlers are 2-1 this season although they aren’t expected to be as good as they’ve been the last five seasons. They graduated Jacob Japprou who is the school’s all time leading scorer. The long and skilled GFRR line-up will be playing a Thief River Falls team that has some experienced rough and rugged types up front and guard Will Anderson is an up and comer. Seeing how the length of Austin Slaughter, Braedan Hanson, Tanner Soleim, and others does against a solid Class AA team from Minnesota (AA is the second smallest of four classes in Minnesota) will be interesting.
