One of 3A’s most heady, and steady players, Norwalk shooting guard Matt Guessford has been a busy guy lately making a number of campus visits.
The 6-foot senior has been all around the state visiting Division III and NAIA programs, but was able to note two in particular that are showing the most interest in him right now.
“I’ve had Division III and NAIA schools contact me. The ones that have stayed in constant contact with me are Simpson, Coe and Grand View — mostly phone calls and texts. I’ve looked at Buena Vista and Wartburg too, and I’ve visited all of those schools,” said Guessford.
“I’d probably say Simpson and Grand View are most interested in me right now. I really enjoyed Simpson, Coach (Brad) Bjorkgren seemed like a really great guy, he’s hoping to turn the team around this year and I think he can do it. Same thing with Grand View, both schools were great education-wise, and tremendous coaches with real good teams.”
The cerebral sharpshooter spent his 17U season playing with Iowa Fire last spring and summer. He mentioned his offensive game became more diversified while playing with the team.
“I thought the thing that I mostly improved on was being a better threat to score, not just making 3s, but getting to the hoop and my pullup jumper has really improved lately,” said Guessford, who defined his playing style to PHI.
“I love playing defense, guarding the other team’s best players is probably one of my best strengths. And also my basketball IQ is a strength of mine, making smart passes, and not making errors — stuff like that.”
He added: “My strength and conditioning still needs to improve, I do fine at the high school level, but at the college level I’ll have to up it.”
With his senior season starting today, Guessford talked about what his role will be with the Warriors this season.
“Last year as a junior my role was to guard every team’s best scorer, and on offense try and help make plays to set up other guys like Baylee (Steele) or Carter (Albrecht),” he said. “But coming into this year I’ll probably have a little bit more of a scoring role, but keeping my same defensive role, and just playing good basketball.”
