Already with two offers in tow, Rock Valley sophomore Jason Taylor has quickly become of the state’s most sought-after big-men, regardless of class.
North Dakota and South Dakota State became the first two schools to offer late this summer, and he’s been spending some time heading to high-major Division I elite camps since the grassroots season concluded.
“I went to Creighton’s elite camp and Purdue’s elite camp. I’ve gotten letters from Western Illinois and South Dakota, also Virginia. Last year I got a some stuff from Boise State, and that’s about it,” said Taylor.
The center certainly is one of the state’s tallest prospects, and says that he’s approaching the 7-foot mark.
“At the hospital their scales only go to 6-foot-10, and I’m pushing that up,” said Taylor, who certainly benefits from his great height.
He was good enough this offseason to play up at times with the Martin Brothers 17U, but primarily played with the 15U squad.
“What I did probably my best was what I do normally, just everything down low, banging inside and stuff, and then defense was just as good as normal. Where I improved most was shooting my free-throws, my percentage went up a lot. And then more of me finding more open spots on the court,” said Taylor.
“Probably my main strength is just getting down low in the post and playing with my back to the basket. Also me rebounding and kicking out for assists, and setting screens-and-rolls, mainly stuff like that.”
After a successful freshman campaign where he averaged 9.5 points, 2.5 blocks, and 7.7 rebounds, Taylor says his production and his leadership should increase this season.
“This year I’m probably one of our leaders compared to last year, I’ll be doing more than last year, playing more and talking more and stuff,” he said. “I’m just hoping to do what’s necessary for the team and to hopefully do more for our team.”
